I sent out a party invitation last week and then realized I had made a mistake—I wasn’t sure of the couple’s last name. And so I tried to unsend the Evite . That didn’t work either, though it was worth a try; that is, until now, when AOL says it plans to roll out an “unsend” feature for emails in its Inbox app sometime this year. You know you’ve hit send too quickly if you have ever emailed your phone number to someone by accident or ended up sending a job candidate your old résumé by mistake (or a resume at all, for that matter). The feature isn’t unique. Facebook Inc. recently released an opt-in “unsend” option . And Google offers a similar function called “undo send,” but you have to enable it first—it’s not on by default.
AOL already has the ability enabled in Inbox, and my colleagues there say they don’t even know how many times users have taken advantage of it so far because there’s no good way to track it (and for obvious reasons, AOL engineers can’t access people’s private mailboxes). But I bet it happens with some regularity whenever someone realizes right after pressing Send they’ve made a mistake or forgot a vital piece of information.
It is admittedly pretty satisfying to see the “Undo” option for a message you’ve sent to someone else, just like it’s satisfying to see that little checkbox appear in Gmail when you’re trying to send an email and have forgotten to attach a file. But the reality is that countless people are inept at writing emails and sending invitations. Unsend features exist because we frequently make mistakes on our digital devices—or rather, they serve as an after-the-fact remedy when we realize we made a mistake.
In other words: It may seem counterintuitive for AOL to offer such a feature at all. Why not leave it up to users themselves? Because then they’d never do it! This way, AOL can give them cover, take the blame if anything goes wrong and say, “Hey, we don’t make you do anything—it’s your decision.”
