When you delete your Twitter account, it takes a few minutes for the account to be deactivated. For a short time after deletion, some content that is publicly available on Twitter may still be viewable in search engines like Google or Bing.

Twitter is the most popular microblogging platform in the world, used by heads of state, sports celebrities, news agencies, and organizations. But it’s not just for public figures – 1 billion people use Twitter each month to see what’s happening in their world.
The 2-year lo ng research project TweepMap ended recently: I deleted every single one of my tweets except the very first ones so we could find out what happens when you delete Twitter. You can read all about this experiment here (in Dutch). This article will give you an overview of what happened with Orville loosen and how other researchers are investigating our digital traces online. This will be illustrated using three examples: a successful job application; an unsuccessful job application; and a medical study on how our minds react to threatening situations.

Unsuccessful Job Application: What happens when you apply for jobs with fake personalities and interests? In this case, an Australian unemployed man created a fake profile as if he were someone completely different, somebody, who really wants a job. The result: 70% of employers contacted him directly while only 17% of people messaged the real him indicating that social media applications do not always determine what kind of person you are. Medical Study: How does stress affect human decision-making?
In this study, people were given a task in which they had to stop pressing a button when a red light flashed. They earned money for every time that they stopped within 3 seconds, but after 8 seconds they would lose 25 cents per second. The participants received the same scenario ten times, but in two different groups, one group got unreliable information on how much money they had won or lost each round while the other group always received accurate information. The results: in a trial where the stakes are high (losing money) people made fast decisions that were better overall, but when they only had to press a button there was no difference.

When you delete your Twitter account, it takes a few minutes for the account to be deactivated. For a short time after deletion, some content that is publicly available on Twitter may still be viewable in search engines like Google or Bing.
If you haven’t used your Twitter account in 30 days, it will be deactivated and all of your information and previous messages will be erased.
You can’t reuse the old username or email address if you decide to reactivate your account at a later date.
When you do not log into your account during the 30-day deactivation window, we will take that as an indication of a desire to delete your Twitter account.
If you haven’t logged in to reactivate a previously deactivated account you will not be able to. Sign up for a new username and password combination.
If a user follows an account that is then subsequently deactivated, they will notice that they’ve lost one follower and are now following only one person less. If another member uses the same username for their account, notifications from each follow-up will be sent to them by email.
