This is a common question. Yes, we are traceable via your phone number for law enforcement purposes but this will not be disclosed unless compelled by a court order.

What data do you store and how long?

We store a persistent cookie on your device that contains the following information: unique identifier (device ID), IMEI of device, IP address when account was created, when it expires & country code/location name where the cookie was created. We only set this upon successful login to textPlus and it is deleted when you logout or switch devices. Unless there is something wrong with our system, we should know if you have been active in the last 90 days; beyond which point messages are purged off our servers.

Are my messages encrypted & Can I verify contacts before sending/receiving a message to them?

Your messages are not end-to-end encrypted; they can be intercepted at intermediary points. We do not encourage you to send sensitive information over textPlus and if you send password, login credentials or similar information we suggest you encrypt that data before sending it. You can verify your contact by verifying the phone number via TrueCaller for Android users or via Google Voice search “OK GOOGLE” on iOS devices; or by using the IM feature built into our app.

How does Whisper work & Is it private?

Whisper allows you to privately send messages to anyone in your network/contacts who has Whisper enabled. Just tap the whisper icon when composing a message. When you have finished composing the secret message, tap the check image at the top left corner of the screen; this will show up as “sent” in your history tab. The recipient receives an SMS and if they install textPlus and login with their phone number, they will receive a notification that someone sent them a whisper message. This messenger feature is useful for sending sensitive information to your contacts.

Are messages deleted from the server once delivered?

We do not delete messages from our servers as they are part of the account information that we store and use to power features like a call log history, contact syncing, message backup support etc. If you ever want a record to be removed please email us at [email protected] with “remove all messages” in the title and it will be done within 24-48 hours. You can update your username at any time by signing out and signing back in. Passwords are changed every 90 days; you will be notified of this when due for a password change. This is a common question that should be clarified as follows: We use Google’s servers to store your messages and synchronize them across devices. The SMS data will be synced in the background, similar to how dropbox handles file syncing. Once you sign into the app with your phone number, it will pull all messages from Google’s servers and store them on our servers. There is a standalone backup feature under account settings; however we do not recommend that you rely on this method to always keep your data up to date as it can be slow and we do not have control over this functionality. You should always use google’s auto-backup function for which textPlus offers you a link in case you forget/lose access to the primary SMS log history.

What happens if I lose my device & Can I retrieve messages and Which countries are supported?

If you lose your device, simply install textPlus on any other Android or iOS device, login with your phone number and your account will be restored. You can also login from the web at http://m.me/textplus (mobile version of textPlus) to retrieve messages/media content off your device via email ([email protected]). This feature is currently only available for users who have logged into textPlus using their phone numbers, not a username + password combination or just a username on an iOS device.
