What does removing a device from Apple ID do? – [Answer] 2022

Answer

If you chose to set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, deleting a device will stop it from displaying verification codes and keep it safe.

It will prevent the device from accessing Apple services such as the AppStore, iBookstore, iTunes Match, iCloud backups and Find my iPhone. It will also prevent it from being wiped or restored using your Apple ID. If you have additional questions about removing a device from an Apple ID that is not managed by MobileIron please contact apple support at 1-800-MY-APPLE. For more information on managing devices with MobileIron see https://help.corp.mobileiron.com/knowledgebase/articles/28972.

Why am I seeing ‘additional settings required’ when trying to remove a device?

When you try to remove a device for which there are additional settings required, this means that the iCloud backup for that device is taking place. The iCloud backup can be disabled when you remove the device from your Apple ID by choosing to disable ‘Find my iPhone’ Services:

How long does it take to remove a device after removing it from the Apple ID?

If you have devices synced with an iCloud account and they are set up as a Device Group, removal of those devices will effect all members in the group in less than 24 hours. For more information on sync performance please see KB article 3015 . MobileIron recommends removing these types of devices on demand instead of waiting for this process to complete. If you need to quickly remove all devices from all groups selected then follow the steps below: In the People list (on the left of the screen) click on the Device Groups tab. In the Device groups list, open each Group and select Delete all Devices from Each Group . Click Select All or Deselect All check boxes as appropriate, then click Next to continue with removal.

If I change an AppStore device name, how long does it take for MobileIron to recognize this?

Notifications and sync of changes made on AppStore devices can be delayed as much as 10 minutes. After the initial delay, successful notifications occur almost instantaneously if push notification is enabled for iOS devices (this should always be enabled). If it’s not enabled, then notifications usually still work but they will not be pushed to the device. The remainder of changes on AppStore devices occur within a few seconds after the change is made in MobileIron.

It appears that some app tiles are grayed out and cannot be selected. What should I do?

This may occur after adding a device in the Apple ID, if there are too many grayed out app tiles then you may not be able to add devices until more of them have been removed. Please see KB article 3011 for steps to resolve this issue.

Where can I find information on what iCloud services are enabled or disabled for my Apple ID?

You can check AppStore information within your MobileIron console under Manage > Apps & Users > User Info tab > iTunes-AppStore Settings section:

If I change an AppStore device name, when does it update in both MobileIron and the Apple ID? (iOS6)

The change will be updated in MobileIron immediately if push notifications are enabled. If it’s not, the change is updated after the device logs into iTunes at least once for a synchronization cycle OR after a sync operation from your Apple ID account manager is completed. The changes may take between 5-10 minutes to appear in iTunes and on an iOS device.

If I upgrade one of my AppStore devices to a new version, does this affect its status with MobileIron?

No. Upgrades can happen automatically without affecting anything about your relationship with MobileIron. Updates occur within 3 hours or less as long as you don’t disable automatic app updates (which is usually only done during testing). You can also manually check for updates through iTunes by clicking on the icon on your iOS device or by selecting “Check for Update” from a purchased apps’ information page. Updates are pushed to devices just like any other app changes and you don’t need to do anything (unless told otherwise in the update alert).

I can’t see my AppStore devices on the MobileIron console. What should I do?

You will not be able to view these devices if you have provided an email address that does not match your Apple ID or if it conflicts with one of your LDAP users (for instance, if someone’s username is “[email protected]” then this may conflict with the email address [email protected]). Make sure your emails (and usernames) correspond between your Apple IDs and MobileIron accounts. If you still cannot see them, please contact support for further assistance. You should also make sure push notifications are enabled for iOS devices. Finally, you may have enabled Do Not Disturb on your iOS device. This setting may disable push notifications from coming through or it may be preventing iTunes and/or MobileIron from updating the app tiles of apps that are purchased within your Apple ID account.

How can I use my AppStore accounts if they do not have email addresses?

You will need to configure them as “Local” AppStore devices with no enrollment type (this is the same behavior you see when logging in with a local administrator account) which means: Only one device is allowed per user because there is no email address for an enrollment profile. Local administrative access must be turned on; since this creates a visible local admin account, additional security controls should also be put in place. App management is not available on these devices because there is no way for MobileIron to push out app approvals or mobile device management (MDM) enrollment profiles.

Can I change the display name of an AppStore device? How about its username?

Yes, you can change the username and email address associated with a local administrative account by editing it through your Apple ID account manager portal.

Note that if you choose to make any changes here they will NOT update the values within MobileIron but rather force an immediate sync between Apple’s systems which can take several hours to complete from our testing observations. As such, please be sure the correct credentials are present before you update them here. If the sync fails or we are otherwise unable to recognize any changes made here, then your users will see an alert prompting them to enter a new password upon next launch of their iOS devices.

Can I add AppStore accounts with no email address or Apple ID?

No. You must configure AppStore devices as “Local” AppStore devices (with no enrollment type) in order to use these accounts without an associated email address and/or Apple ID.
