Step-1. Download all of your photos/videos from Instagram onto your computer. So downloading this media content onto your hard drives is the only way of keeping it forever!
Step-2. Download any comments you have made on other people’s photos, as these will no longer be available if you close your account. Once again, you can download these comments via the “Download” button that will appear once you hover over the individual comment.

Now that we downloaded our personal photos and comments, let’s move onto the next tip by unsubscribing from all Instagram notifications (if set to email) or removing mobile push notifications (for those who get them). This simply involves going into “Settings” >> “Notifications” and tap on your email address that is connected to your Instagram account.
Step-4. Now we want to deal with the third-party applications you may have set up in order to promote your Instagram content or know when something happens within the platform. Update 2/24/2015: 1) It looks like if you delete a comment made on someone else’s photos that other person will still be able to see it even after your account has been deleted (at least for a while), so make sure you download those comments and then block the offending user so they don’t keep posting garbage that makes you want to kill them.
2) If you get an email from Instagram saying “There was a problem doing what you asked” or something similar, please ignore it as there is nothing wrong with your account. They just might re-open your Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr accounts without you realizing it, so keep an eye out for that!
