Police will allege he used a card belonging to another person without permission and then altered its details before making the purchase. The other person had lost their card several weeks earlier but still had all the data on it. As well as accessing their account online, they also used most of the remaining credit on it and purchased some items for themselves, police said.
“It’s just one of those things where if you lose something or it gets stolen people know enough to cancel their cards,” Detective Senior Constable Mick Doherty said.
“If you have your card stolen, the first thing you do is go online and close your account so they can’t spend any more money on it.”
Officers charged a 25-year-old man with one count of fraud on Tuesday and he has since been bailed by police to appear in Maryborough Magistrates Court in January next year. The suspect has already appeared in court once over this matter but was unable to enter a plea as his lawyer was sick. Police alleged the mistake occurred when staff at the store attempted to avoid using an outdated EFTPOS machine by typing details manually into a computer instead. They got the customer’s name wrong, they said.
Detective Senior Constable Doherty urged all Starbucks customers to check and activate their PIN (personal identification number) on an EFTPOS card before using it at a machine in store. If you discover your account has been used after you lost a card or it was stolen, contact your bank immediately, he said. It is advisable to also close down your old account online as soon as possible. “Even though they have pin numbers and a lot of accounts have security questions these days there’s still people out there that will try it,” Detective Senior Constable Doherty said. “Also keep an eye on what transactions they’re making because if it’s been used by someone else you might get a notification that one of these transactions has gone through where you haven’t authorised.” ## Got a tip?
