Most of us are connected to Facebook. We use it every day, often more than once a day and we don’t even know how much data is being collected on us in the process.
This article will help you download all your data from Facebook so that you can take a look at what has been collected and decide if there is anything you want to delete before permanently deleting your account.
The process might not be as difficult as you think, but then again it might be very time-consuming depending on how many pictures or messages you have sent/received through the years. Either way, this article will guide you through the entire process step-by-step with screenshots.
1. First, go to https://www.facebook.com/help/1311128970284672?helpref=related. It should look something like the image below. Click “Download a Copy of Your Facebook Data” at the bottom right-hand side of the page in blue writing.
2. You will be redirected to another page that shows you what data can be exported and gives you two options for exporting your data; Standard Download and Zip File Download (High Quality). We recommend that you choose High Quality because it is more convenient when downloading pictures but this will take longer than the standard download (not available on the mobile app). For this tutorial, we will choose High-Quality Download which is shown in the image below. When you are ready, click the blue button “Download File” on the right.
3. Facebook will now begin generating your data for download which could take anywhere from a few minutes to more than an hour depending on how many pictures or messages you have sent/received through the app (if it is taking too long try using a mobile browser). You will be able to cancel the download at any time if needed by clicking on “Cancel” which is shown in the image below. Be patient because this step might not be necessary and once again it depends on how much data you have stored on the social media platform.
Once it reaches 100% you will see a message that says “Your Download is Ready” which will redirect you to the data that has been prepared for download.
4. “View Download” at the bottom of your page (not available on mobile app) and it should look like this:
This section also shows how much storage you have used/remaining, links to policies about how Facebook collects and stores your data, access to privacy shortcuts and a button to delete or archive all posts from specific people in one click. You can do this by clicking on the three dots beside each post that pops up after clicking on a name so go ahead and try it out. However, if you want to see more than just a few posts from a certain person then you might have to browse through your timeline and look for them manually.
5. Click the green button titled “Click Here To Start Your Download” which will redirect you to a page that says, “Your Download is Ready” and gives you options to download your data as an archive (zip file) or to print it out.
If you choose the archive option then click on the blue button titled “Download Archive” and if you choose hard copy then click on “Print Friendly Version” as shown below:
6. The last step is to enter your password/OTP and click on the blue button titled “Download My Data”. You should now see this message: “We have received your request for your data download. Check your email for the notification from us and follow the link to download your data.”
Simply click on “download my data” at the bottom of the page labeled “General Account Settings” in Facebook’s Settings area (the arrow next to the question mark, top right). Then you’ll submit your request and wait for Facebook to compile your data, which is provided via an email link.
However, in the coming weeks, Facebook plans to extend the data it permits you to download to include likes, comments, search history, and location history. Users will be able to choose whether they want their data transferred to another service as well.
Log in to Facebook and go to your profile. click on the “Photos” tab and then “Albums.” select the album you want to download, then click on the three horizontal dots next to it. select “Download Album.” Facebook will let you know when they’ve gathered all of the pictures and videos from the album.
Messages you send to individuals other than the one you sent it to will stay on their copy of Facebook, so that it may be seen in your archive. In any case, deleted communications may remain on Facebook’s servers for a while before being erased, and they might also be kept in backup copies for a longer length of time.
Go to Facebook.com/settings and select “Download a copy of your Facebook data.” Tap “Download Archive” instead of “OK.” It might take a few minutes, but Facebook will notify you when your archive is finished. When it’s done, click “Download Archive” again to get the zip file on your PC.
