How To Delete Or Remove Email Account In Apple Mac Mail

I want to delete my email address, but I’m not sure how. My mail is through York University and the email address for it is [email protected] I’ve tried deleting it from this site: https://webapps-mail.yorku.ca/, but then another account self creates with the same name and all of the emails are sent to that one too. So obviously I also have to remove an account from Thunderbird (and YMSG).

My biggest issue was trying to get a clear list of steps that would work for me. I did manage eventually – Here’s what worked: (kinda long)

1) deleted the [email protected] account from the York University webmail site

2) went to ‘Account Settings’ in TB, and chose to delete the email address

3) Confirmed by entering my password into a new window that popped up

4) After the box asking if I was sure about deleting it closed, I repeated step 1 (webmail site), but this time select “Delete Account” at bottom of the page instead of choosing an email address to delete from there. Note: You can’t do it from Thunderbird – you have to do it through the school’s website  Thunderbird is just where all your accounts are stored/accessed.

How to Add-Remove Email Accounts from Apple Mail

I then deleted [email protected] from my ‘Gmail’ account:

I went to Gmail’s website and clicked on the little circled arrow at the top right corner.

Clicked “Sign in”

From the sidebar menu (upper left of page), chose the “+Add another email address you own” link, then followed their steps for creating a new account with your existing email address (note: not [email protected])

6) After I had successfully set up my Gmail account, I deleted [email protected] from that new account and it was gone! Since then, all emails have been going to my regular Gmail account instead like they should have done in the first place.

This probably isn’t useful to everyone, but I hope it is for someone, now that there’s a perfectly clear and easy way to do this!

Just want to add – my steps above are for Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard (the current version). So far I have not found any changes or issues as of updating to the newest version of Mac OS X (10.8 Mountain Lion) nor when downgrading from 10.8 back to 10.6.

Thanks so much for writing those instructions in such an understandable form—they worked perfectly! My email address was [email protected] and after following your directions it disappeared within minutes and everything was exactly how I wanted it. Thank you so much!

I was having the same problem with [email protected] no longer syncing to my Mac after updating to Mountain Lion. Your steps above worked perfectly and now I can’t wait for Mail 5 on Mavericks!

Thanks, this worked well for me too when upgrading from Snow Leopard to OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion). As an aside, it appears that Apple is continuing to use CalDAV not only for iCloud but also for MobileMe: http://daringfireball.net/2013/07/calendars_and_storing_data_in_cloud#commeetingfromapple

The key here is that *some* of the information displayed is from MobileMe not iCloud.

I would have emailed the above, but don’t have a registered account on that site…

@chrisperkins: Thanks – will add this to the article! @EmanueleGiacomelli: Doh! Thought it was explicit in the original wording – yes, it’s ‘MobileMe’ (the online sync service for Calendar & Contacts). iCloud is Apple’s new cloud storage service & doesn’t relate to Mail at all! If your email address [email protected] still isn’t syncing correctly after following these steps, there could be a problem with your Gmail settings… Or you have created another email address using [email protected] as your email address…

I followed the instructions from above (http://www.york.cst.yorku.ca/services/email/) and could not get Mail to sync with Gmail any longer after entering my [email protected] address in:

1) Delete Calendar events for all accounts: /Users/$USERNAME/Library/Calendars  (extended attributes, I’m sad to say). I never had an issue previously with this, but it does have something to do with the Google Calendar plugin within Mail 4 that stopped working when
